Hydraulic Cylinders

At VHS Hydraulic Components we stock vast quantities of hydraulic cylinders, with most sizes stocked up to 1 metre stroke. Working with our sister company Neilson Hydraulics, we also offer an in-house cylinder repair service. We offer a quick, efficient turnaround on repairs of general hydraulic cylinders, providing a detailed quotation, test certificate and serial number.

Hydraulic Cylinders

The idea for hydraulic cylinders goes back to the French mathematician Blaise Pascal. He studied fluids, pressures, and vacuums in the mid-1600s, four centuries ago. What Pascal discovered is that fluids don't compress in the way that air will. Hydraulic cylinders were first developed in the late 18th Century. Hydraulic systems are based on Pascal’s law of fluid pressure, which states that when pressure is applied on a fluid, an equal pressure will be exerted throughout that fluid in all directions.

What are the 4 types of Hydraulic Cylinders?

Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinders - A single acting hydraulic cylinder, also known as a single acting hydraulic ram, operates in a single direction. It typically has a single port at the bottom of the cylinder where pressurised fluid is pumped into the system. As the fluid enters the system, it fills the cylinder and extends the piston inside.

Double Acting Hydraulic Cylinders -  A double acting hydraulic cylinder is a hydraulic cylinder in which the fluid alternately acts on both sides of its piston. It has a port on each end, filled with hydraulic fluid for the pistons' retraction and extension.

Telescopic Cylinders - Telescopic hydraulic cylinders, sometimes called multi-stage cylinders, are a type of linear actuator consisting of a series of tubular rods called sleeves. The sleeves (usually four or five) sequentially decrease in diameter and are nested inside of each other.

Jack Cylinders - Hydraulic jacks are made from two cylinders connected together, with one larger than the other. The cylinders lift objects by applying force to the fluid in a cylinder which in turn, exerts pressure throughout and against the surface of the cylinder.

What Are Hydraulic Cylinders Used for?

Hydraulic cylinders can be used for any application where a strong push or pull force is required. They initially found numerous uses during the industrial revolution, when the increase of factories and production required multiple hydraulic applications. Now, hydraulic cylinders are utilised in equipment across a wide range of industries – including construction, manufacture, mining, and offshore industries.
